Alternative Guide: Ljubljana Personally.

From the foreword by Nevenka Šivavec:

"The life of artist Walid Siti has been shaped by three very different and unique places. In addition to his hometown of Duhok in Iraqi Kurdistan and the multicultural city of Londron, where he has lived since 1984, Ljubljana also plays a significant role in his biography. Siti lived in Ljubljana between 1976 and 1982, a period during which his personality and creative identity underwent crutial development. At that time, Ljubljana was also quietly preparing for political and cultural changes.

The late 1970s marked the end of the prevailing optimism associated with the economic boom. Gradually, a decline in living standards and widespread recession began to emerge. Within the seemingly still functional, orderly yet rigid and monotonous mechanisms of daily life, subversive socio-political and cultural concepts were being articulated. Resistance to the dominant established culture grew stronger, and subcultural and coundercultural movements came to the forefront.

During these years in Ljubljana, Walid Siti experienced moments of complete freedom as well as harsh repression. He revisited his memories of his years in Ljubljana through the exhibition Systems and Patterns at the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC) in October 2012"
